A Christmas Carol at The Lowry

Matthew Warchus’ smash-hit Dickens — big heart, sharp conscience, and a ghost story that still lands.

Matthew Warchus’ A Christmas Carol treats Dickens as a ghost story with a conscience. Scrooge is properly mean before he is redeemed, the spirits do their job without wink-wink padding, and the ending feels earned rather than glued on. It has become the version people cross the city for, and The Lowry’s Lyric stage gives it the scale the story wants.

The run at Salford Quays opens on 11 December and plays through to 10 January. Weekend evenings go first, so check tickets early if you have a date in mind. Pier 8 is a simple tram hop, and the foyer is a decent place to wait out a cold night before the house opens. It is a festive staple in this building because the standing ovation usually feels honest. Families are welcome. The story still has teeth.
