Free Fireworks at Heaton Park

Council displays return — quiet show at 5pm, lantern parade, then the main musical bang at 8.

Free fireworks return to Heaton Park for the first time since 2019. The council runs a quiet show at 5pm, a lantern parade, and then the main musical display at 8. There is no bonfire. From 3pm the park has a funfair, a food village and storytelling, so the afternoon is a day out even if the sky is what you came for.

The park is enormous, on the north side of the city, and the fireworks read best from the open ground with a clear view upward. Free entry means it will be busy, especially for the 8pm bang. Go earlier than you think if you want grass rather than the back of a crowd. Wrap up, take the route you know back to the tram or the car, and decide in advance whether the quiet 5pm display is your night or the later one is. Both are outdoors. The later one is louder. The earlier one is the kinder option if you have children who do not love the noise. Plenty of sky either way.
