Manchester Christmas Parade

Free festive parade through the retail district — expect crowds, costumes, and market-day energy.

The Manchester Christmas Parade is a free procession through the retail district, with costumes, music and the particular energy of a market Saturday that has been given a route. It gathers around the cathedral on Victoria Street and moves off through the shopping streets in the early afternoon. Families line the pavement. The outfits do the visual work. The sound of a crowd that has been waiting in the cold does the rest.

Sunday 6 December, from 1pm to about 3. The exact route is confirmed closer to the day, so check before you commit to a corner. Arrive early if you want a view of the procession rather than the back of someone’s hood. Once it finishes, the markets in Albert Square and the surrounding streets are packed, which is either the second half of the plan or the reason to leave by a side road. Free, outdoors, and weather-dependent in the way every December pavement event is. Wear something you can stand still in.
