Melanin Markets — Winter Wonders
Black-owned traders at The Whitworth — fashion, jewellery, food, live music and dance.
Melanin Markets’ Winter Wonders fills The Whitworth with Black-owned traders for a weekend of fashion, jewellery, food, live music and dance. Forty-plus stalls, with African and Caribbean makers at the centre of it, timed so Christmas shopping can happen somewhere other than a high-street chain. The gallery on Oxford Road stays a gallery around the market, which means you can buy a print or a piece of jewellery and still walk through the art.
Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 November. Entry is free. The Whitworth sits in the park at the end of Oxford Road, so the approach is pleasant even in late November if the weather holds. Music and dance break up the browsing, and the food stalls are worth stopping for rather than treating as a queue you endure. Go earlier in the day if you have a particular maker in mind. Free entry and a Christmas weekend will fill the building. The work is the reason to be there. The setting just makes the afternoon easier.
