Top of the Stairs at Denton West End
Sunday afternoon northern soul, with guest DJ Gamekeeper Jones.
Top of the Stairs marks the first Sunday in April with guest DJ Gamekeeper Jones at Denton West End Working Men’s Club. Five hours, all vinyl: northern soul, Motown, sixties soul and R&B, £5 in, from 3pm to 8pm on 4 April. Jones is the visiting name. The residents still hold the session together, and a guest who knows this scene uses the invitation to bring records the regulars have not pulled for a while.
The bar winds up around 7.45pm, so the last stretch of music is the one you stay for with a drink already in your hand. Grosvenor Street, Denton. By April the afternoon light is a bit more generous on the way in, and the session is still an indoor Sunday built around dancers. If you have been coming through the winter guests, Phil Jones in January and Debbie Bonnell in March, this is the spring one. If you have never been, a named guest is an easy Sunday to start. Watch the floor, pay a fiver, and give the vinyl time. Five hours is the luxury. A laptop never enters into it. The records are in sleeves, and the dancers can tell.
