Top of the Stairs at Denton West End
Sunday afternoon northern soul session. All vinyl, £5 in.
Top of the Stairs in February is the residents’ afternoon. Five hours of northern soul, Motown, sixties soul and R&B, all vinyl, £5 in, at Denton West End Working Men’s Club. Sunday 7 February, 3pm to 8pm. No guest name on this one, which suits a month when the regular DJs have the floor to themselves and can play the long way round a theme.
The bar stops serving around 7.45pm, so plan the last drink before the last half hour of records. Grosvenor Street is the address in Denton. A first-Sunday soul session in February is a good deed to your diary: it is dark outside, the clubs in town are either quiet or trying too hard, and a vinyl afternoon asks for nothing except that you turn up ready to dance or ready to listen. Five pounds at the door. Cash is the safe assumption. The room fills with people who treat the date as fixed, so if you are new, watch the floor for a while and join when a record you know gives you a way in. The residents will get there. They have all afternoon.
