Top of the Stairs at Denton West End
Sunday afternoon northern soul, with guest DJ Phil Jones.
Top of the Stairs opens 2027 the way it closes a year: five hours of northern soul, Motown, sixties soul and R&B, all on vinyl, at Denton West End Working Men’s Club. Sunday 3 January, from 3pm to 8, £5 in. Guest DJ Phil Jones joins the residents, which gives the first Sunday of the year a visiting crate alongside the regulars who know this floor.
The bar stops around 7.45pm. New Year’s Day is the Friday just gone, and a Sunday afternoon of 45s is a gentler way back into the month than another late night. Grosvenor Street, Denton. The session is aimed at dancers. The records are chosen for them, the guest spot included, and the room has the particular concentration of a northern soul afternoon: people listening properly, then moving when the right one drops. Wrap up for the walk from the bus or the car. Once you are in, five pounds and a long set will carry you through to early evening. Phil Jones is the reason to make this the January Sunday rather than waiting for February’s regulars-only afternoon.
