Top of the Stairs on 7 March brings in guest DJ Debbie Bonnell for the first Sunday of the month at Denton West End Working Men’s Club. The rest of the brief stays put. Five hours of northern soul, Motown, sixties soul and R&B, all of it vinyl, £5 at the door, from 3pm until 8. A guest crate is the reason this particular Sunday is worth flagging. Bonnell joins the residents, so the afternoon has a visiting ear as well as the people who play this floor every month.
The bar stops around 7.45pm. Grosvenor Street, Denton. Early spring still feels like winter on the walk in, and the room is the warm bit: dancers who take the music seriously, 45s chosen for the floor, and enough hours that you can arrive after lunch and stay until the evening without the night becoming a late one. Five pounds. Worth being there for the guest spot rather than only the last hour, because a visiting DJ on a vinyl session often plays the records they do not get to play at home. The residents keep the afternoon grounded. Bonnell is the change in the middle.
